Concussion

Falls, Car Accidents & Sports Injury Are Just a Few Examples

The occurrence, effects of and management of concussion have come to the forefront in recent times. This is largely driven by an increase in knowledge and the relationship between concussion and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). Not only are the effects of concussion a consideration in sports-injury scenarios, but also within the general population – with falls and motor vehicle accidents being just a few examples of sources adding to the mix. In fact, one doesn’t need to strike their head to suffer a concussion. A mere acceleration-deceleration of the head may be enough to result in this traumatic brain injury.

Concussion Symptom Presentation

The human brain can be thought of as an intricate map, with each lobe responsible for specific functions. These functions are diverse, ranging from memory and cognition, to gaze stabilization, to reaction times… and more. Depending on the area(s) of the brain affected by a concussion, individuals can present differently from each other and require varied recovery times and interventions. This diversity in symptom presentation supports individualized approaches to recovery, with integrated communication and care between medical providers managing concussed patients.

DANA

DANA™ is the most sensitive cognitive assessment tool available to track an individual’s cognitive function over time and is just recently becoming available in the rehabilitation realm.  DANA™ is a powerful tool for return-to-learn, return-to-play and return-to-work scenarios, especially when combined with physical assessment tools.

CPT Assessments and Treatments

CPT is proud to offer a team of physical therapy clinicians who have advanced training in vestibular and concussion rehabilitation through The American Institute of Balance™ (AIB) and ImPACT. Our Center of Specialty Care (CSC), integrates DANA software for neurocognitive assessment and houses state-of-the art equipment from BIODEX™ and NATUS™ to support physical assessment.  Combining the data from these resources with a complete physical assessment, patient interview and feedback from concussion management team members (MD, athletic trainers, parents, teachers/counselors), supports a more precise identification of deficits and needs, and the development of an efficient rehabilitation program.

These resources are not limited to assessment and can further support the concussion specialist with implementation of an effective program, by offering treatment modules that are impairment driven and can be
patient-specific.

All CPT Locations Coordinate Care

CPT is proud to offer concussion and vestibular certified therapists in ALL locations throughout the area – Forest City, Hawley, Dunmore, Carbondale and Honesdale.  Concussion assessment and care can easily be coordinated between our Honesdale Center of Specialty Care and any of our other
four locations
