Pulmonary Reconditioning
When You Struggle to Breathe
Pulmonary rehabilitation at CPT can be incorporated across many conditions as lung disorders and difficulty with breathing often accompany typical rehab diagnoses.
Conditions that affect lung function and respiratory ability, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), emphysema, and most recently COVID-19, can have a direct effect on an individual’s ability to perform basic functional tasks. Rehabilitation programs that apply a diverse approach to managing the impairments that accompany breathing issues have been shown to positively impact independence, activity level, and quality of life.
Comprehensive Lung Disorder Treatments
With pulmonary disorders, we have observed that our patients demonstrate the greatest gains with a team approach involving both physical and occupational therapy. This combination supports gains with aerobic endurance, strength, posture, and overall function. Patient education to incorporate energy conservation techniques within a daily routine is also essential, so patients learn to work “smarter not harder.”
COVID-19 Long-Haulers
“COVID-19 Long-Haulers” are the newest group of patients seeking pulmonary care. Although the long-term effects of COVID-19 continue to be uncovered, its influence on breathing, endurance, and overall activity tolerance are widely reported. A comprehensive rehabilitation program is a recognized component of recovery.
